Zeeland Record
Construction will soon get underway on the expansion and renovation of Hoogland Park, and Zeeland city officials say it’ll cost a lot less than earlier expected.
The Planning Commission last Thursday unanimously approved the site plan for the project. Then on Monday, the City Council approved awarding the contract for construction to Gaines Township-based Carbon Six Construction, which submitted the low bid of $1,185,031, well below the estimated project cost of $1.7 million. The council set a project budget of $1,413,063.
“Our architect did several background checks on Carbon Six and received very positive reports as far as their quality of work,” City Manager Tim Klunder said.
The Hoogland Park project will include construction of new universally-accessible restrooms, a new hexagon-shaped picnic shelter, walking paths, parking lot improvements, a tower play structure for older children, a freestanding crawl-through log play structure for younger children, swings, fencing, landscaping improvements that include the installation of 22 trees and a rain garden/stormwater detention area.
Construction could begin as early as May on the park expansion and renovation, with completion expected by December, Klunder said.
The city in 2019 approved the acquisition of a 0.36-acre parcel at 370 E. Rich Ave., east of the current 0.54-acre Hoogland Park property. The 370 E. Rich parcel was rezoned by the city to public facilities use earlier this year so that it could be incorporated into the park. The site plan approval covered both parcels.
The city had identified improvements to Hoogland Park as its second-highest priority in its parks master plan that was adopted in 2022. The top priority project, pickleball courts at Huizenga Park, was finished last year, Assistant City Manager and Finance Director Kevin Plockmeyer said.
