Zeeland Couple Injured in Port Sheldon Crash
The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of 146th Avenue and Stanton Street.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, a 32-year-old Wyoming man was driving his 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck northbound on 146th when he failed to stop for the stop sign and collided with a 2015 Dodge Ram truck that was westbound on Stanton, driven by a 73-year-old Zeeland man. The Dodge Ram had the right of way, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The driver of the Chevy pickup was ejected from the vehicle, while the driver of the Dodge Ram and a 75-year-old woman, also from Zeeland, were pinned in their truck. The victims were taken to area hospitals.
Shillito Named Tulip Time Grand Marshal
Zeeland Record
Retired Zeeland West High School varsity coach John Shillito has been named a grand marshal for one of the Tulip Time Festival parades next month.
Shillito, who announced his retirement in January after 20 seasons coaching the Dux, will be the grand marshal for the Gentex Kinderparade on Thursday, May 8 in downtown Holland.
Meanwhile, the Quality Car Wash Volksparade on Saturday, May 10 will have two grand marshals – Evergreen Commons president and chief executive officer Jill Ver Steeg and Resthaven president and CEO Deedre Schuckert.
Shillito led West to five state championships during his tenure as the Dux coach, including the Division 3 state crown last November at Ford Field in Detroit. Under his leadership, the Dux posted a record of 185-46, a winning percentage of .801, made the state playoffs 18 times and had just one losing season.
Shillito will be joined by former Zeeland West players in leading the Kinderparade.
"We are all thrilled to be part of Tulip Time. It is such an important part of the fabric of the Holland/Zeeland community, and we are very honored to participate," Shillito said.
On Saturday, Ver Steeg will lead alongside a group of community members for the Volksparade.
"Knowing that Evergreen Commons is among many deserving organizations in Holland — each worthy of celebration — I was humbled by this honor. With incredible gratitude, I celebrate our members, volunteers, donors, Board of Directors, staff, and legacy partners, while I say thank you to the Tulip Time board for this recognition," Ver Steeg said.
Evergreen Commons serves adults 55 and older, inspiring older adults to live their fullest lives by disrupting the way people age. During Tulip Time, the organization welcomes more than 400 people daily, offering an authentic Dutch lunch accompanied by a Dutch Dance performance.
Resthaven, represented by Schuckert, celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2025. Founded in 1945, Resthaven is dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults through compassionate care. In 2025, The Warm Friend, a Resthaven residence, will mark its 100th anniversary.
“Tulip Time is such a beloved tradition in Holland, and being asked to serve as co-grand marshal during our 80th anniversary year makes it even more special,” Schuckert said. “We are so pleased that Tulip Time has chosen to honor our seniors and highlight the services available to them."
