Taft Project Bids Under Budget

City officials in Zeeland received a pleasant surprise when they went out for bids on the upcoming construction on Taft Street, from Main Avenue south to Huizenga Avenue.

The City Council on April 7 approved awarding the contract for the Taft project to Site Work Solutions Inc., a Zeeland Township-based company which submitted the low bid among seven bidders at $2,881,153 – well below the engineers’ estimated cost of $3,594,656.

“We are very comfortable with Site Work Solutions … They did the Main Avenue project the last couple of years, and we’ve been very happy with their work,” City Manager Tim Klunder said.

The project is expected to get underway in June, Klunder said.

Factoring in water and sewer improvements as well as street reconstruction, the council set a $3.6 million budget for the project. The city had earlier projected an overall project cost of $4.5 million.

According to a memo from Assistant City Manager and Finance Director Kevin Plockmeyer, funding for the Taft project will be split among three sources. The city street fund will cover the cost of street improvements at $2,448,685. The Zeeland Board of Public Works will pay for water main improvements at $670,771 and the Clean Water Plant will cover the sanitary sewer construction at $480,544, Plockmeyer wrote in the memo.

The project on Taft involves a complete street reconstruction, installation of sanitary sewer from Main Avenue to Valley Drive, storm sewer and drainage improvements, replacing the water main, replacing lead water service lines, adding sidewalk in locations on the west side of the street that do not have sidewalk, and concrete drive approaches, Plockmeyer said earlier this year.

The project also includes work on South Jefferson Street from the Zeeland Christian School parking lot to the dead end to the south, West Lawrence Avenue from Taft to Zeeland Christian and Lincoln Avenue from Taft to the dead end to the west, Plockmeyer said.

On Lawrence, the street will be rebuilt, sanitary sewer will be installed and the water main will be replaced. Sidewalk will also be replaced where it has been removed, and concrete drive approaches will be installed, Plockmeyer said.

On Jefferson from Lawrence to the south dead end, the street will be reconstructed. Sanitary and storm sewer will be installed and the water main will be replaced. Sidewalk will be added to the east side of the street and concrete drive approaches will be built, Plockmeyer said.

On Lincoln Avenue, the pavement will be replaced, as well as sanitary sewer, storm sewer and lead water service lines.

The section of Taft from Lawrence to Central, as well as the portions of Lawrence and Jefferson, will be done from June to August to coincide with summer break for Zeeland Christian School, Plockmeyer said.
