Tornado Touches Down in Zeeland Township

The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids Monday confirmed a tornado touched down in Zeeland Township during last Thursday night’s storms.

The tornado touched down at 10:24 p.m. about 3.75 miles southeast of the city of Zeeland and traveled about 3.5 miles before it lifted off the ground in Jamestown Township, about 1.25 miles south of Forest Grove Station, at 10:28 p.m., NWS said in its report.

The tornado was rated an EF-0, had an estimated peak wind of 75 mph and had a width of about 50 yards maximum, according to the NWS report.

“Multiple farm buildings and trees were damaged along this brief tornado path,” NWS said in its report.

Ottawa County Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt said in a separate release the night of the storm that the county’s outdoor warning sirens were used to alert residents to two different tornadoes that had been indicated on radar, but there had not been a confirmation of a touchdown prior to Monday’s NWS announcement.

Damage that was reported across the county included trees down, power lines down, blocked roads and small fires, Hunt said.

At the height of the storm, more than 13,000 Consumers Energy customers were without power in Ottawa County. A few small outages were reported by Zeeland Board of Public Works.
