Zeeland Record
No charges were filed in connection with a reported weapons complaint near the campus of Zeeland’s two high schools on May 28.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the area of 96th Avenue and Riley Street about 11:35 a.m. after receiving reports of a male subject pointing a firearm at people and vehicles in the area.
After receiving reports of the incident, all Zeeland Public School buildings were placed in “se-cure” mode, meaning that all outside doors were locked, and no one was allowed to either en-ter or exit any school buiiding. Classes continued as usual inside all buildings, ZPS spokeswom-an Brandy Navetta said.
ZPS families were informed via email as soon as it was confirmed that all schools were in “se-cure” mode, Navetta said.
At about 1:10 p.m., deputies located the subject and made contact with him regarding the inci-dent. After speaking to the individual, deputies determined that the incident was unfounded and “no criminal activity is believed to have occurred,” Capt. Jake Sparks of the sheriff’s office said.
All ZPS schools resumed business as usual about 1:20 p.m., Navetta said.
“All principals reported that their students and staff did an outstanding job following protocols,” Navetta said.
“We appreciate the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department and the Zeeland city Police for their quick response and communication.”
The sheriff’s office said it appreciated “the prompt cooperation of the community and area schools as there was heavy police presence in the area while deputies attempted to locate the subject.”
