Susan Dalman, 69


Susan Rene Dalman, of Zeeland, 69, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2025, in Grand Rapids following a brief illness. 

Sue was born on June 12, 1955, in Flint to Geraldine (Schleuter) and Harold Gillihan.

Sue was dedicated to her community. She took pride in everything she did and found great satisfaction from her role at Holland Charter Township. She loved the spring when her flowers graced her deck and yard. 

Sue was the cherished wife of 40 years to Michael and the best mother in the world to Lindsay Dalman, Mallory and Joshua Dalman-Hoeve, Abrianna Dalman and Aaron Chavis. Her greatest joy came from her family, especially her beloved grandchildren: Nicole and Emelia Dalman; Gideon, Georgia, and Viola Jaymes Dalman-Hoeve; and the eagerly-anticipated baby girl Chavis expected in November. 

Sue is also survived by her siblings, Steven and Shirley Gillihan, and Christine and John Schade; in-laws, James and Mollie Dalman, Dave and Cheryl Dalman, and Mary Dalman; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Bausack; her parents, Harold Gillihan (and his wife Phyllis) and Geraldine Pontegele (and her husband Fred); and by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harold and Viola Dalman.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 4 at Faith Reformed Church, 220 W. Central Ave., with Rev. Jonathan Elgersma officiating. Burial was in Zeeland Cemetery.

Mary Vander Slik, 92


Mary Vander Slik, 92, of Holland, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Mary was born in Holland on May 25, 1933, to John and Edith (Hoeksema) Wedeven. She married Jerome Vander Slik and they raised their four sons in Zeeland. They were members of First Reformed Church in Zeeland. 

Mary was a talented singer. She enjoyed singing in church choirs and was often a soloist at weddings and funerals. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; son, Jerry Vander Slik; and her sister, Joyce Boerman.

She is survived by her sons, Larry Vander Slik, Brian Vander Slik (Cynthia Cundiff) and Cal Vander Slik (Cherrie); grandchildren, Kyle and Darci Vander Slik, Heather and Chris Campbell, Austin and Patcharin Vander Slik, Jessica Vander Slik, Emily Vander Slik, Jennifer Vander Slik, Melissa and Jason Gibson; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

The Vander Slik family is grateful for the kind and excellent care their mother received from both Gentiva Hospice (Lauren and Bailey), and all the staff at SKLD.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, June 4 at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland. Interment was in Overisel Cemetery.

Benjamin Van Dis, 88


Benjamin Ernest Van Dis, 88, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

Ben was born and raised in East Saugatuck. He attended Holland Christian High School and received his GED while serving in the U.S. Army. He married the love of his life, Loie, in December 1958 after the Army assignment.

Ben was a gifted builder and hard worker. He was employed by local builders for years until he began his own building business with his friend Bill Kolean. He finished his career and working years as co-owner of DeWaard Interiors. He enjoyed teaching youth group students and his grandchildren how to make ink pens on his lathe. He was very involved in building projects big and small at Central Wesleyan Church, where he was a member.

Ben will be remembered most for his heart of prayer and his love for missions. He served as prayer coordinator for years at CWC. He was also part of several mission trips, serving in places like Barbados and St. Croix.

Ben was preceded in death by two children, Douglas Van Dis and Jeanne Van Dis; parents, Benjamin and Irene Van Dis; in-laws, Louis and Alma DeWaard; and sisters-in-law, Karyl Van Dis and Elaine Van Dam.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Loie Van Dis; children, Laura and Mark Ebbers,

Steve and Nancy Van Dis; grandchildren, Joel and Kara Ebbers, Anna and Matt Beck, Leah and Josh Mugford, Steven Guy Van Dis and Wilson Van Dis; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Bertus Van Dis, Pauline and Daryl Wabeke, Jim and Gloria DeWaard, and Jack DeWaard; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3 at the Central Wesleyan Chapel, 446 W. 40th St., Holland. Burial was in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

Ben's family wishes to thank the team at Hospice of Holland and the Memory Care staff at Quincy Place for their excellent and loving care of Ben.

Dale Vander Weide, 73


Dale Bernerd Vander Weide, 73, of Zeeland, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2025. 

Dale was born on March 16, 1952, in Grand Rapids. Shortly after graduating from Calvin Christian High School, he met his one and only true love, Hope. They celebrated 50 years of marriage late last year. 

A man of remarkable talent and tireless work ethic, Dale was self-taught, highly skilled, and endlessly creative. He built a successful big rig mobile repair business - a pioneering endeavor in the 1980s - and later served as a lead mechanic for the city of Holland. From driving buses on church tours and mission trips to building his own family home, Dale lived a full and meaningful life, always teaching and mentoring those around him.

Dale is survived by his wife, Hope Vander Weide; children, Timothy and Dawn Westveld, Rhonda and Matt Van Kley, Paul and Michelle Vander Weide, Nate and Kait Vander Weide, and Aaron and Lucy Vander Weide; grandchildren, Jenna and Taylor Fisher, Cassie and Dallas Martinez, Kirsten and Austin Goedhart, and Jade Chandler; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Vander Weide; brother, Dick and Nancy Vander Weide; and many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland. Visitation and reception will follow from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the same location.

Matthew Viel, 51


Matthew David Viel, M.D., 51, of Holland, passed away of natural causes in his sleep on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Matt was born in Grand Rapids on Dec. 25, 1973, to Rick and Cyndee (Kamminga) Viel. He was raised in Kalamazoo and graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School. He also graduated from Calvin College, Loma Linda Medical School and also received a master's degree in medical ethics from Loma Linda (Calif.) University. 

Matt then started his medical professional career in South Dakota, then Edgerton, Minn., Delton, Mich., and finally in Holland. He married Jennifer Bruins on June 28, 1997. Matt and Jen are members of Graafschap Christian Reformed Church. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Cyndee Viel; brother-in-law, Kevin Bruins; father-in-law, Roger Bruins; and his nephew, William Sutton.

Matt is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his sons, James and Sydney Viel, and Seth Viel; father, Rick and Deb Viel; sister, Mindy and Rob Sutton; mother-in-law, Marty Bruins; in-laws, Eric and Janette Bruins, Emily and Steve Dyk; and many extended family members.

A funeral service was held Saturday, May 31 at Graafschap Christian Reformed Church, 5973 Church St., Holland. Interment was in Gibson Cemetery.

James Weber, 90


James Weber, 90, of Burnips, passed away Monday, May 26, 2025.

Jim served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of Burnips United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay leader and Sunday school superintendent. He served on the Hamilton school board for eight years and the Salem Township Fire Department for 30 years. Jim worked as a machinist at General Electric for many years and retired from the Careerline Tech Center where he worked as an instructor.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Linda; children, Jamie and Jim Bussis, Jeff and Susie Weber, Shari Weber, and Shawn and Tara Weber; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Marie Alward.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 31 at Burnips United Methodist Church, 4241 30th St., Burnips. Interment was in Salem Township Cemetery.

Dean Compagner, 65


Dean Compagner, 65, of Holland, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025, after a five-year struggle with cancer.

Dean graduated from Zeeland High School in 1977. Dean owned Lakeside Sheet Metal and was co-owner of The Upper Cut Salon and Spa with his wife. 

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lorie; his children and grandchildren, Mitchell and Ashley Compagner (Eleanor, Greta, Thea), Claire and Clark Becksford (Nolan, Aiden, Leila), Reid and Heather Compagner (Emery, Rosie); mother, Polly Stroven; siblings, Amy Basch, Ross and Julie Compagner, Tyce and Patty Compagner; and sister-in-law, Carla and Eric Pennings.

A memorial service to honor Dean’s life was held Friday, May 30 at Gibson Christian Reformed Church, A-6486 140th Ave., Holland. Interment was in Gibson Cemetery. 

Janice Markvluwer, 90


Janice Markvluwer, 90, of Holland, died Sunday, May 25, 2025 at an area care center.

Jan was a member of Bethany Christian Reformed Church and current member of Maranatha Christian Reformed Church. She attended Calvin College where she earned a teaching degree. 
She taught second grade at Zeeland Christian School and preschool for Community Education.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jarvis; her parents, James and Marie Sturing; Infant twin sons; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Stan Jacobs; brother, Melvin Steenwyk; and brothers-in-law, Richard DeKleine and Adrian VanderVliet.

Jan is survived by her children, Garry (Sheila) Markvluwer, Janna (Gary) Lauritzen, Greg (Melissa) Markvluwer and Jackie (Chris) Viening; grandchildren, Kyle (Abby) Teasley, Matt (Emily)Teasley, Leah (Antoine) Draper, Tyler (Josephine Strauss) Markvluwer, Josiah (Caroline) Markvluwer, Elizabeth (Anthony) DeWitte, Eli Markvluwer, Peter Markvluwer, Andrew (Chelsea) Funckes, Nathan Funckes, Nicole (Camden) Andringa and Anna Funckes; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Vander Vliet; sister-in-law, Joyce Steenwyk; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 28 at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland, with Pastor Dan Walcott officiating. Burial was in Graafschap Cemetery.

Leonard Victor, 101


Leonard Walter Victor, Sr. passed away Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the age of 101. 

Leonard was born on Jan. 27, 1924, in Holland. Upon graduation from Holland High School in 1942, he went to fight in World War II.

Leonard proudly served in the U.S. Army under Gen. Patton during the Allied liberation of France. Leonard later wrote a book documenting his wartime service, titled "Memories."

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Leonard began his career with Herman Miller, where he rose to be a supervisor. He was known for his patience and soft-spoken nature.

Leonard was married for 66 years to his wife, Dorothy (Van Bragt), who preceded him in death in 2014. He is survived by his son, Leonard Jr.; daughter-in-law, Linda; and a grandson, Leland.
For the last few years, Leonard was a resident of Resthaven Maplewood, which he called home and received compassionate care from a loving staff.

A funeral Mass was held Saturday, May 31 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 480 152nd Ave., Holland.
