Zeeland Record
For the past 75 years, Bethel Christian Reformed Church has been located just east of Zeeland’s downtown at 515 E. Main Ave.
Now, that property is in line to become part of the planned Reckitt/Mead Johnson expansion project.
Church members voted May 28 to sell the Bethel CRC property to Mead Johnson. The decision to sell was made by a “supermajority” of the congregation’s members, said Hugh Bartels, clerk of the church council.
“We pray that God would be present with us in this key time,” a statement in the church’s June 1 bulletin reads. “We pray that God would provide his peace as we navigate through this season. We pray that we might be people of grace and compassion. We pray that God would use this decision to further his kingdom in ways we never thought possible.”
As of press time, Mead Johnson & Company LLC had not yet closed on the sale of the church property.
Mead Johnson approached Bethel officials in January to inquire about the possibility of acquiring the church’s 2.36-acre property, Bartels said.
Bethel is now in discussions with Third Christian Reformed Church about a potential merger of the two congregations, Bartels said.
