Zeeland Record
The field of candidates in the running for three seats on the Zeeland City Council is down to six after the primary election on Aug. 5.
With 19.7 percent of the city’s 4,508 registered voters casting ballots in Zeeland’s first council primary election since 1985, city Cemetery & Parks Commissioner Amy Langeland was the top vote-getter among the seven candidates, receiving 474 votes out of the 888 ballots that were cast.
The next three candidates were tightly bunched, with physical therapist Andrew Bult finishing second with 387 votes. Real estate agent and city Planning Commissioner Rebecca Perkins placed third with 371 votes, just three votes more than small business owner and Zeeland Public Schools secretary Kylee DeBoer, who had 368 votes.
Incumbent Councilman Glenn Kass, a 16-year council veteran, finished fifth in the primary with 318 votes. Ericka Humbert, a public relations and marketing freelancer who was recently involved in efforts to oppose Reckitt/Mead Johnson’s rezoning of residential properties for its plant modernization project, finished sixth with 223 votes.
Hillery McAlpine, director of marketing and communications for the Holland Area Visitors Bureau, was eliminated from the council race as she finished seventh with 163 votes.
Voters on Nov. 4 will choose three candidates from the field of six for four-year terms on the City Council. The council will have at least two new members, as incumbent Councilman Rick Van Dorp is running unopposed for mayor and fellow incumbent Jim Broersma did not seek re-election.
