Public Hearing Set for Monday on Sunday Alcohol Sales

The Zeeland City Council wants to hear from you on whether the city should allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

The council will hold a public hearing Monday night on whether the city’s alcohol ordinance should be amended to allow for the sale of alcohol on Sundays from 12 noon to 2 a.m. Monday, or during a special event within that time period that was approved by the council.

The city’s current alcohol ordinance bans any selling or serving of alcohol on Sunday.

The hearing, which is slated for 7:10 p.m. at City Hall, will also address whether alcohol may be possessed and consumed in a city park, such as the splash pad or Vande Luyster Square, if the alcohol is purchased from a social district license holder and if all social district guidelines are followed.

City leaders have been discussing whether to legalize Sunday alcohol sales for the past several months. Earlier this year, the city reached out to current on-premises liquor license holders to see if there was interest in legalizing Sunday alcohol sales. The Gritzmaker restaurant on Main Avenue came out strongly in favor of it.

City voters legalized alcohol sales in November 2006 by approving a ballot proposal by 40 votes, 1,425-1,385.

For those who are unable to attend Monday’s public hearing, written comments will be accepted. They can be sent to the city clerk at 21 S. Elm St., Zeeland, MI 49464, or email to the city at Clerk@cityofzeeland.com.
