Zeeland Record
The Zeeland City Council will have three new members, starting next month.
Amy Langeland, Rebecca Perkins and Andrew Bult were elected to four-year terms on the council during the Nov. 4 election. All three were running for council for the first time.
Langeland, a longtime member of the city’s Cemetery & Parks Commission and former president of the Zeeland Historical Society, was the top vote-getter with 759 votes. Perkins, a current planning commissioner, finished second with 707 votes, while Bult placed third with 659.
Kylee DeBoer finished fourth with 583 votes. Incumbent Glenn Kass, who had served on council for the past 16 years, was fifth with 579 votes. Ericka Humbert finished sixth with 445.
Councilman Rick Van Dorp, who has been on the council since 2004, ran unopposed for a two-year term mayor. He will replace retiring Mayor Kevin Klynstra on Dec. 1, when he and the new council members will be sworn into office.
Langeland is a librarian at Heritage Christian School and was formerly an account financial manager at Prince Corporation/Johnson Controls Inc. She thanked those who supported her in her campaign.
“I am especially honored to serve and work for the city of Zeeland,” Langeland said.
Perkins, a realtor who has lived in the city for more than 20 years, said she was “thrilled” to be elected to council.
“I am grateful to the citizens of Zeeland for their support and trust,” Perkins said. “I look forward to listening, learning, and helping Zeeland continue to be the incredible community we all love.”
Bult, a physical therapist who manages the Zeeland center of Hulst Jepsen Physical Therapy, said he hopes to “build on the foundations laid by previous councils and continue to make Zeeland a vibrant community where families, neighbors, and small businesses can continue to grow together.”
“I’m honored and humbled to be able to serve the city of Zeeland. I don’t take this lightly,” Bult said.
This year marked the largest Zeeland City Council candidate field in 40 years. Seven candidates ran in the August primary, with Hillery McAlpine dropping off after the primary as the top six vote-getters advanced to the general election.
Kass, who served on the city’s Planning Commission for six years before being elected to council in 2009, expressed his thanks to the community for their support.
“It has been my honor and privilege to serve Zeeland for the past 22 years (between Planning Commission and City Council),” Kass said. “I’m incredibly proud to have been a part of all the improvements and accomplishments that have occurred here. I will forever be grateful for the trust that voters have put in me. I am looking forward to other opportunities to continue serving this community. I am proud to have been a part of the legacy of this city.”
