Tree Lighting, Parade Launch Christmas Season

Santa Claus arrives in downtown Zeeland at the end of Monday night’s parade.

Hundreds of local residents lined the streets of downtown Zeeland Monday night to officially launch the start of the holiday season.

With temperatures in the upper 20s and a few light snow flurries in the air, it was a perfect backdrop for the celebration. The Tarnished Brass Band entertained early arrivers with Christmas holiday favorite songs, while an individual dressed much like Buddy from the movie “Elf” encouraged spectators to spread Christmas cheer by singing loud for all to hear.

In his final act as the city’s mayor, Kevin Klynstra lit the 23-foot-tall Christmas tree in the splash pad park.

After the tree lighting, spectators were entertained by the city’s annual Magical Christmas Parade. The Zeeland High marching band led off the parade by performing “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.”

The highlight of the evening, as usual, was the arrival of Santa Claus at the end of the parade.

Christmas activities continue this weekend downtown with Feel the Zeel of Giving Christmas. Each year, the city partners with a local nonprofit organization to host a series of events.
This year, Compassionate Heart Ministries is the selected nonprofit.

On Friday and Saturday, you can find horse-drawn trolley rides, a chance to visit with Santa, write letters to be put in Santa’s mailbox and take advantage of extended holiday shopping hours.

Horse-drawn trolleys will pick up passengers between 4 and 8 p.m. both nights, starting from 140 E. Main Ave. Trolley rides are donation-only. Tickets will be available for sale on-site beginning at 4 p.m. both nights. You may purchase tickets for any open time slot for that day only, first-come, first-served. Trolleys depart every 15 minutes.

Santa Claus will be present for visits inside Drip Coffee, 150 E. Main Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
