Zeeland Record
You could call the robotics program at Zeeland’s Creekside Middle School a dynasty.
The RoboDux, as the Creekside team is known, won their third consecutive state championship in the FIRST Tech Challenge last Saturday at Trinity Health Arena in Muskegon. It’s the fifth time the RoboDux have won a state championship.
The RoboDux will be joined at the FIRST Tech Challenge world championships in Houston, Tex., next spring by the Overclucked Bots from Cityside Middle School, who finished eighth at the state finals. A total of 72 teams competed in the state finals, of which nine advanced to the world championships.
Formerly known as the FIRST Vex Challenge, the FIRST Tech Challenge is a robotics program for students in grades 7-12 where teams design, build and program a robot to compete in an alliance format against other teams.
The two Zeeland teams qualified for the state championship in regional qualifying events earlier this fall. The RoboDux posted a perfect 17-0 record in the qualifying meets while the Overclucked Bots went 15-2.
At the state tournament, the RoboDux won all seven of their matches to win the Marie Curie Division and advance to the playoff round, including one where they were paired up in an alliance with the Overclucked Bots. The team from Cityside also advanced to the playoffs with a 5-2 record in qualifying.
In the playoff round, the Overclucked Bots finished with a 4-2 record, while the RoboDux went 3-1. The Robodux advanced to the finals, where they were paired up in an alliance with a team from Belmont to win both of their matches by scores of 243-192 and 275-195 to win the state championship.
In addition to winning the state championship, the RoboDux also took third place for the meet Design Award. Meanwhile, Overclucked Bots coach Chase Carpenter received the Compass Award, an honor presented to an adult coach or mentor who has given outstanding guidance and support to the team. The team submitted a video last week nominating Carpenter for the honor.
