The amphitheater at Lawrence Street Park will be getting some needed improvements next spring.
The City Council on Dec. 15 approved awarding a contract for painting and caulking services at the amphitheater to Grand Rapids-based Reliable Service Contractors, which submitted the low bid for the project at $13,354, and set a project budget of $15,000.
“This has been one of those items that we have talked about (doing), it’s been in the budget for the last couple of years,” Assistant City Manager Kevin Plockmeyer said. “The bowl and the seating areas definitely needs to be repainted and recaulked. We’re hoping to get this done before the summer season, especially the Soundz of Summer (concert series).”
The city received five bids, one as high as $67,990 for the project. But Plockmeyer is confident that Reliable Service Contractors will be able to complete the work successfully.
“They do this work day in, day out,” he said. “It’s kind of what they do. It’s a big company. We feel very confident (in) the work and their approach to doing this.”
The amphitheater project had not been included in the city’s capital improvement project list for the current fiscal year budget, but Plockmeyer expressed confidence that the city’s Parks and Facilities budget has available funds to take on the project without having to ask City Council for approval of a budget amendment.
The project will not involve any removal of the plastic molded seats at the amphitheater.
“This will (involve) the surfaces, painting and caulking them, just getting it touched up and ready for summer,” Plockmeyer said.
The city in its bid documents placed a completion date of May 15 for the project.
