An investigation is continuing into the cause of a fire at Creekside Apartments on Zeeland’s north side last Friday night that displaced the tenants of 12 apartment units and left two firefighters injured.
Firefighters were called to the apartment complex at 341 N. State St. at 5:54 p.m., as the building that housed units 1-12 was reported on fire.
Interim Fire Chief Mitch Harsevoort was one of the first firefighters at the scene.
“We had flames approximately 10 feet high coming out of the building,” Harsevoort in an interview Saturday afternoon from the scene. “Tenants were going in and out of the building, so our priority was to get them out.”
Firefighters brought the flames under control within an hour of arriving. All of the building’s residents got out safely. Six of the 12 apartment units are considered a total loss, and all 12 units had “significant smoke and water damage,” Harsevoort said.
The Ottawa County chapter of the American Red Cross assisted displaced residents in finding temporary housing. The damaged apartments units remained unoccupied as of Monday.
Two Zeeland firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries and did not require hospitalization, Harsevoort said.
Five other fire departments - Olive Township, Holland Township, Zeeland Township, Blendon Township and the city of Holland – assisted Zeeland firefighters at the scene, Harsevoort said.
Zeeland Police, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police have assisted Zeeland Fire Rescue in the investigation.
No dollar amount of damage has been determined yet, Harsevoort said.
