RWE Solar Presentation Rescheduled For Next Month

A planned public presentation by the developer of the proposed Silver Maple solar project in Zeeland and Jamestown townships has been rescheduled.

RWE Clean Energy will hold two public meetings – one in each township – to present its plan for the 200-megawatt solar project. The first meeting will take place Tuesday, March 17 at 6 p.m. at Evergreen Ministries, 4512 48th Ave. in Jamestown Township, with the second to be held Wednesday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at the Township Hall, 6582 Byron Rd.

RWE had planned to hold a public meeting Feb. 26 at the Dozeman Center inside the Drenthe Grove park. However, that meeting was postponed last week after Township Fire Chief Brock Bruce did an analysis of the Dozeman Center’s capacity, at the request of Township Manager Josh Eggleston.

“He determined that while the space would accommodate 299 (no sprinkler system), the door system, without having a panic bar, sets the number at 49,” Eggleston wrote in a memo to the Township Board.

“I can suspect more than 49 people plan to attend that meeting (when it is held),” Eggleston told planning commissioners at their Feb. 10 meeting.

Eggleston contacted RWE to let the company they would have to find a new location for its meeting. Project manager Joe Brochu told commissioners at the Feb. 10 meeting that the company was working on finding a new venue and suggested the possibility of two public meetings, one in Zeeland and one in Jamestown.

RWE is planning to apply to the Michigan Public Service Commission for approval of the $300 million Silver Maple project. The company is applying for the project under the entity name Silver Maple PV, LLC, according to the project website.

The Silver Maple project will consist of solar panels and inverters arranged in photovoltaic arrays, along with associated facilities and infrastructure. The project is proposed to cover 1,914 acres in the two townships. All of the parcels are zoned either agricultural or agricultural rural residential, according to project documents.

As of Monday, no application for the project had been filed with the MPSC, according to the commission’s website.

Written comments may be submitted prior to the public meeting at silvermaplesolar@rwe.com.
