Construction will soon get underway on new pickleball courts at the Drenthe Grove Park.

The Zeeland Township Board earlier this month approved awarding the contract for construction of the pickleball courts and site work on the adjacent playground to Site Work Solutions, a contractor based in the township. Site Work submitted the low bid among the four companies that submitted bids at $178,205.

The project will double the number of pickleball courts at Drenthe Grove from three to six, Township Manager Josh Eggleston said.

The pickleball court construction is just the first part of improvements at Drenthe Grove that will take place this year. Sinclair Recreation has provided preliminary costs for playground equipment and two shade shelters, ranging from $170,000 to $215,000.
The consulting firm Prein&-Newhof plans to coordinate with the township and Sinclair to finalize the selection of equipment for the playground portion of the project, according to a memo from Prein&Newhof project manager Jonathan Nelson to Eggleston.

The township will provide furnishings that it will purchase that include two benches, two picnic tables and one waste bin, according to the memo.

The township included the Drenthe Grove improvements in its capital improvement plan for this year, at a total estimated cost of $500,000.

“This project will very likely come in under the target budget figure,” Eggleston wrote in a memo to the Township Board.
