The city of Zeeland is inviting artists to submit proposals for its 2026 downtown Zeeland mural project, an initiative aimed at enhancing the city’s downtown through creative, engaging public art.
As downtown Zeeland continues to grow through public and private investment, the city is committed to fostering arts and culture as a key component of placemaking. This project reflects an ongoing effort to create memorable, welcoming spaces that celebrate creativity and community identity.
Artists are invited to submit original mural proposals for multiple outdoor locations within downtown Zeeland. Proposed artwork should be cheerful, energetic, and visually engaging, with an emphasis on whimsical, abstract, or expressive styles. Designs that encourage interaction and photo opportunities are especially encouraged.
“This project is an exciting opportunity to continue shaping the visual identity of downtown Zeeland,” City Marketing Director Abby deRoo said. “We look forward to seeing creative proposals that bring vibrancy, energy, and a sense of place to our community.”
Selected artist(s) will be commissioned to complete the project for an agreed-upon fee. Proposals should include a total project budget covering labor, materials, equipment, and insurance. Artists must also be willing to collaborate with the city throughout the design process and participate in promotional efforts related to the project. Applications must include color renderings, examples of past work, a resume or CV, references, and a detailed project budget.
Key dates to remember are:
• Application Deadline: Thursday, April 30
• Finalist Interviews: May 4-15
• Artist Selection: End of May
• Project Completion: Anticipated by end of June
