East Wins in Soccer Facility Debut

The Zeeland East varsity girls soccer team unveiled the new Zeeland soccer facility last Friday afternoon with a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Grandville.

The Chix got goals from Aubrey Gomez, Tenley DeWitt, Marilyn Meza, Natalie Bailey and Meg Weeldreyer in improving to 2-0 to start the season.

In its first game under new head coach Emily Slagter March 18, East edged Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 1-0 as Weeldreyer scored the game-winning goal with four minutes remaining.

Track Teams Compete at GVSU Meet


The Zeeland East and West track teams are off to a strong start to the season after competing last week at the Laker Challenge indoor meet at Grand Valley State University.

East finished third in the girls meet with 39 points, while West was 23rd with five points. In the boys meet, West finished sixth with 34.2 points, while East was 10th with 16 points.

In the girls meet last Thursday, East’s Adalyn Raab won the 1,600-meter run, cracking the five-minute barrier with a time of 4:59.38, 10 seconds faster than her nearest competitor.

The Chix also placed two throwers in the top three in the shot put, as Laura Maartense finished second with a toss of 37 feet, 8 inches, and Lily Huizenga took third with a throw of 37 feet, 7-1/2 inches.

Meredith Cook took second for East in the 400-meter dash in 58.95, while Bri Cole placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches. 

East placed eighth in the 4x600-meter relay as the team of Emily Graves, Libby Post, Saniya Shepard and Nadia Cuevas ran a time of 7:30.60.

West’s only points in the meet came from Avery Towne, who finished fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:22.27.

In the boys meet on March 18, West’s Clayton Ramsdell won the high jump with a school-record leap of 6-6. East’s Bennett Bing finished seventh at 6-0.

Both schools finished in the top five in the 4x300-meter relay. West finished second, as the team of Xane Herrygers, Garrett Kapenga, Brandon Holman and Ethan Dalman posted a school-record time of 2:28.07. East’s team of Kameron Compagner, Tristen Hinson, Carter Vardon and Levi Bannach took fifth with a school-record time of 2:29.92.

Holman finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 1 inch, a new school record. East’s Sam Manning set school records in both the 60-meter dash (6.95 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.4), finishing fourth in both races.

West’s Jonah Leslie came in fifth in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet, 8-1/4 inches, while teammate Keagan Smith finished seventh in the 1,600-meter run in 4:35.97.
