Sleeman Off to Strong Start at Kentucky

Former Zeeland West softball all-stater Carly Sleeman is having a strong start to her first season at the University of Kentucky.

Through games of April 5, Sleeman is leading the Wildcats in batting average at .380, and is tied for the team lead in home runs with nine. She belted her ninth home run of the season to lead off the game last Friday against No. 3-ranked Oklahoma, which turned out to be Kentucky’s only run in a 9-1 loss to the Sooners.

Sleeman transferred to UK last year after two seasons at Central Michigan University, where she set the Chippewas’ single-season record for RBIs (50) and tied the school record for homers (17) last year in earning first team All-Mid-American Conference honors.

Sleeman, who has played catcher and third base, has played in all but one of Kentucky’s 41 games this season. She has 41 hits in 108 at-bats and has driven in 32 runs. She has a slugging percentage of .685 and an OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) of 1.105.

Kentucky currently has a record of 22-19, but a 1-14 record in the Southeastern Conference.
