Zeeland Record
The Zeeland City Council has approved a six-month extension of its agreement to provide library services to Blendon Township.
The council on April 6 unanimously approved an amendment to its current service agreement that has been in place since 2014, extending the contract to the end of this year. The agreement was to have expired June 30, Howard Miller Library Director Amanda Hanson said.
The contract extension comes as Blendon Township will put on the August ballot a request to renew the township’s library millage. That levy goes to support both the Howard Miller Library as well as the Gary Byker Memorial Library in Hudsonville.
“If (the millage) passes, this contract extension will turn into a new contract. It will be valid until 2038,” Hanson said.
If the millage fails, the library services agreement will end on Dec. 31, and township residents won’t have library access, Hanson said.
During the six-month contract extension, Blendon must pay the cities of Zeeland and Hudsonville 50 percent of the revenue generated by the township library millage from the December 2025 levy.
Under the contract, fees, penal fines and state aid payments will be allocated between Zeeland and Hudsonville in proportion to the taxable value within the Zeeland and Hudsonville school districts.
Howard Miller Library officials put together an education campaign last summer to inform Blendon residents on library services in advance of the upcoming election, Hanson said.
Blendon voters approved a 0.3-mill levy for library services in August 2014, 491-236.
The service area for the Howard Miller Library includes the city of Zeeland, Zeeland Township, Blendon Township and Olive Township.
