Zeeland Record
On April 7, the Zeeland Township Board of Trustees approved the social media policy following revision by Township Manager Josh Eggleston and Township Attorney Ron Bultje.
“I think it’s going to be a really good start that way we can, you know, start exploring this (social media platforms) and try some things. We may have to make some adjustments, but I think this a great framework to get going,” Trustee Scott Beute said at the meeting.
Only four of the seven board members, which is the minimum required for a quorum, were present at the meeting, allowing the board to vote. Any more absences would have prevented official action.
This decision came after March 17, when the board spent considerable time heavily dissecting the affordances of social media as an extension to further engage and inform residents. Eggleston wrote in a memo to the board, further explaining the functionalities in detail so as to better serve the community.
While Treasurer Melissa Veldheer agreed with Eggleston that a social media presence can be immensely useful for connecting, informing, and engaging Zeeland residents, Trustee Dave Barry was skeptical, questioning the redundancy of additional communication methods, viewing it more as another option.
The approval follows the board’s adoption of the live-streaming and recording policy draft, which was also reviewed by Eggleston and township attorney Bultje. Both policies are aligned with the board’s ongoing efforts to improve communication and transparency with the public.
