State Sen. Sean McCann has officially filed his candidacy to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga in the 4th District congressional race this year.
McCann, D-Kalamazoo, last week submitted the maximum 2,000 petition signatures that he collected from all six counties that are in the 4th District, including Ottawa County.
“I am grateful for every single volunteer who dedicated their time to help get us on the ballot and who believe in our mission of lowering costs and actually getting things done for Michigan families,” McCann said in a news release from his campaign. “Throughout this entire campaign, I am meeting and talking to voters across our community who are ready for change – together, we will flip this seat and deliver real representation for Southwest Michigan in Congress.”
The 4th Congressional District includes the cities of Zeeland, Holland, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, St. Joseph and Benton Harbor.
McCann currently represents the 19th District in the state Senate. His district covers all of Kalamazoo County and portions of Van Buren and Calhoun counties.
A graduate of Western Michigan University with a degree in political science, McCann worked in community development as executive director for the Vine Neighborhood Association after graduation. While working for Vine, he ran for the Kalamazoo City Commission and was elected to the commission in 1999. He went on to serve five two-year terms.
McCann then served in the state House from 2011 to 2015. While in the House, he voted to expand health insurance to more than 600,000 Michigan residents and raise the state’s minimum wage. He also played a role in the establishment of an independent citizens redistricting commission to draw up boundaries for state legislative districts and congressional districts, according to his Senate website.
McCann currently serves as majority vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and chairs the Energy and Environment Committee. His other committee assignment include the Finance Committee, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Senate Regulatory Reform Committee.
Huizenga, a Zeeland native who now resides in Holland Township, has served in Congress since 2011.
