The Record was first among 11 entries in the Class D weekly category (circulation 3,000 and under) for its July 17, 2025 cover story on Howard Miller Company announcing that it was going out of business.
The Better Newspaper Contest inspires journalists across Michigan to produce their best work, which in turn nurtures stronger communities. A total of 89 newspapers submitted 2,643 entries for the 2025 competition, which were judged by members of the Arkansas Press Association.
Honored as Daily Newspapers of the Year were the Detroit News (Class A), Traverse City Record-Eagle (Class B), Kalamazoo Gazette (Class C) and Ludington Daily News (Class D). Named Weekly Newspapers of the Year were the Huron County View (Class A), Oxford Leader (Class B), Grosse Pointe News (Class C) and Newberry News (Class D).
