LST 393 museum to host D-Day commemoration May 29-31

Next weekend, the USS LST 393 will be the site of the commemoration of the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day invasion. The commemoration will be the 12th community-wide remembrance of the sacrifices made by America’s heroes during the invasion of Normandy and throughout World War II. The May 29-31 event is sponsored by USS LST 393 Veterans Museum, a ship that was at Omaha Beach on D-Day, and is now located on the Muskegon waterfront. All proceeds benefit the museum and area veterans.

Dozens of World War II reenactors will participate. Also on display will be a World War II-era vehicles including halftracks, trucks, Jeeps and an anti-aircraft searchlight. 

“Air Raid Muskegon” starts at noon Saturday, May 30, with replica anti-aircraft guns blasting at a mock aerial attack on LST 393 by the Hooligans Flight Team flying vintage aircraft, along with a narrated ground skirmish between Allied and Axis forces.

The “Aquastar” cruise boat is expected to offer cruises throughout the weekend.

A highlight will be a 1940’s era swing dance on the Milwaukee Clipper cruise ship moored west of LST 393. The cost is $15/ticket.

The Northside Lions Club will offer a pancake breakfast beginning at 8 am on Saturday, May 30. Other vendors, including G&L Chili Dogs and Culver’s frozen treats, will serve food all day long.

Tours of LST 393 Veterans Museum will be $10 per person ($20 per family, members free) on Saturday, May 30.
