Zeeland Record
Thousands of shoppers strolled through the lively, colorful streets of downtown Zeeland last Saturday to attend the 12th Spring Peddlers’ Market and the Little Peddlers' Market on Church Street between Main Avenue and Central Avenue.
This year marked the 5th Little Peddlers Market, elevating the next generation of makers and innovators. I got to speak with a few of these creative and intelligent minds, learning about business one sale at a time.
The outdoor market, sponsored by Mead Johnson Nutrition, featured live local artists, delicious food trucks, baked goods, antiques, hand-made children's clothing, jewelry, coffee, home decor, and much more.
The Little Peddlers also got to showcase their “BIG” ideas coming to life, such as rainbow hair accessories, 3D-printed dragons, handmade jewelry, crochet flowers, and sensory items for emotional regulation and calming. This part of the event provides younger generations with the opportunity to learn responsibility, practice real-life money skills, build communication skills, and create community connections.
First-time Little Peddlers Aubrey, Maddie, and Evie sold 3D-printed items, sugar scrubs, keychains, cards, sensory bags, and candles. These young vendors know the importance of preparing and learning to run a business successfully.
“It’s so fun. I love seeing what all the people come up with, and it takes a while to prepare most things,” Aubrey and Maddie said.
When they were asked how many sales they had made within the first hour of the market, the ambitious sellers said: “Probably around like 20 or something?”
“Yeah, hard to count.”
They encourage other young innovators to create and sell at the Little Peddlers next year.
Christine Juarez, another kid entrepreneur, sold handmade hair accessories like beautiful ribbon flowers, perfectly crocheted flowers, and other pieces. Juarez felt a strong sense of pride in learning on her own, especially with the support of her family, including her mom and sister.
“I just saw crochet stuff on my TikTok and I wanted to learn how to do it, and the same with the flowers. I saw other people doing it, so I thought I could do that better,” she said.
Juarez felt her experience as a Little Peddler was “awesome,” a solid 10 out of 10.
This Zeeland tradition brings the community together and continues to shape the next generation of future business owners and creators, allowing them to take risks, innovate, problem-solve, and build confidence through real-life customer interactions.
Rain or shine, the community continues to come together, encouraging and supporting one another.
The next Peddlers’ Market event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in downtown Zeeland.
