When it’s freezing outside, it takes a team to get through the ice.
The Mona Shores girls track team chipped away, point by point on a bitterly cold spring day, to capture its third-straight Greater Muskegon Athletic Association city track championship on May 1 at Western Michigan Christian High School.
The Sailors edged out a determined Fruitport team, 122-116, by picking up point after point throughout the day. They also did it with a solid core of leaders.
Mona Shores completed its task by taking home a first-place finish on the last race of the night, the 4x400 relay.
“We told the ladies, ‘the last race leaves us on a high note,” said Mona Shores coach Kyle Mireles. “These girls have been battling all day, and they knew exactly what they had to do.
I’ve got a tough, gritty group of seniors.”
Ellery Horness, Ella Grimm, Elena Reister, and Natalie Hall, all seniors, tucked in the day’s last race by battling all the way through to the last leg to take the first-place finish in a time of 4:19.27. The four seniors’ capstone finish was also backed by a title finish in the 4x800 with a time of 11:15.16.
“These girls, this is their third (GMAA) win in a row, so the three-peat means a ton to them,” said Mireles. “Especially for those seniors to go out on a high note, it’s fabulous for us.”
The Sailors’ team title was captured by key first-place finishes on the day and were fittingly led by their strong relay teams. In the 4x100 relay, Ah’Kiera Shepherd, Kylie Geoghan, Lydia Ogle and Tiana Steward captured the title with a time of 53.25.
Hall was first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.94. She combined for points in four different events for Mona Shores. Seven different players tallied multiple points on the day.
Emma DeYoung, another gritty senior leader for the Sailors, capped off her four years of GMAA track battles by finally taking home a city high jump title. A jump of 5-2 gave her a first-ever city title after taking second in ‘25, fourth in ‘24 and third in ‘23.
“These are all girls who score multiple points in multiple events that showed up in a big way for us,” said Mireles. “Horness, Hall, and Emma DeYoung, all three of those girls are captains and they’ve been making a big difference and leading from the front.”
In all, Mona Shores had 19 different individuals contribute to its city title. On a day that highlights individual performances, there was no better way to shine than as a team.
“It’s a long day, and we’ve been fighting through back-to-back and close meets where the kids have just been pushing through,” said Mireles. “We’ll gear up for conference and regionals, and today lets some of our conference competition know, we are coming.”
