Construction on the Church Street project continues to work its way northward.
Work got underway Monday on the second phase of the project, between Central to just south of Main, as crews also continued to work on the section between Lincoln Avenue and Central. Church was closed south of Cherry on Monday, Assistant City Manager Kevin Plockmeyer said.
In addition, work is also underway on water main work along Church between Main Avenue and Washington Avenue, Plockmeyer said.
Plockmeyer outlined a project timetable to the City Council at its June 15 meeting, noting that the section of Church from Lincoln to Central will remain under construction through mid-July. Storm sewer work in that area is expected to be completed by July 2, to be followed by sanitary sewer work July 6-17. Then, the street work, including installation of concrete and asphalt, is scheduled to take place July 20-Aug. 7, Plockmeyer said.
The section from Central to Main Avenue will be under construction through August, starting with removals and watermain work now through July 2, storm sewer construction July 6-17 and sanitary sewer work to be wrapped up around July 29, Plockmeyer said.
Traffic downtown will get a little more challenging come August, when the intersection of Main Avenue and Church will be shut down the entire month. Construction along Church from Main north to Washington Avenue is expected to take place in September and October, Plockmeyer said.
“Unfortunately, we are going to have three intersections shut down at the same time,” Plockmeyer said at the June 15 council meeting. “I know that’s going to cause chaos, but we really need to do that in order (to meet our project deadline). We’re pushing up against Nov. 15 (the scheduled project completion date).”
