Neither Andrew Reidsma nor Melissa Winchester had run in the Zeeland Zoom 5-kilometer race before the June 23 event downtown.
Reidsma, a former distance running standout at Trinity Christian College in the Chicago area, was encouraged to sign up for the race by friend and fellow runner Zach Start.
“It was great to get out downtown,” Reidsma said. “It was a great spot for us. I had fun out there.”
Reidsma, of Wyoming, was the first runner to cross the finish line, completing the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 9.30 seconds – a pace of 4:53 per mile.
Reidsma’s older brother, Simon, took third place in 15:31.84, while Dan Campbell of Zeeland finished second in 15:23.41. Start, of Jenison, placed fourth in 15:36.08, while another Jenison runner, Brantley Van Overloop, took fifth (15:41.23).
Winchester, a former All-American at Aquinas College who won the Amway River Bank Run 5-kilometer race last year, was the first female to finish, posting a time of 16:31.84.
“It was perfect conditions – nice, flat, fast, a lot of the community out, and all the sprinklers we ran through were much appreciated,” Winchester said.
The weather was ideal for the runners – clear skies and temperatures right around 70 degrees when the race began.
Katarina Lundgren of Ada was the second-fastest female, posting a time of 17:17.98. Rounding out the top five female runners were Alyson Enns of Zeeland in third place (17:38.97), Zeeland East cross country coach Danielle Groendyk in fourth (18:21.59)
and Shelby Kuiper of Zeeland in fifth (19:28.28).
Josh May of Grand Rapids was the men’s master’s (40 and older) champion, completing the course in 17:37.42. The women’s master’s champion was Andrea Kolehouse of Greenville, who ran a 20:12.13.
A total of 680 runners took part in the Zeeland Zoom, while 134 kids took part in the Little Zoomers race, event organizer Kerri Van Dorp said.

The Zeeland Little League 12-and-under All-Star team put together an impressive performance during tournament pool play last week, winning three of four games.
Zeeland opened pool play June 23 with a 4-1 victory over West Ottawa at the Jim Kaat Ballpark, as Mason Overweg and Zachary Doornbos combined on a three-hitter. Overweg struck out 11 over 4-2/3 innings for the win.
Doornbos also delivered the tie-breaking run with an RBI single in the fifth. Zeeland added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on two hits, a walk, a wild pitch and a steal of home.
On June 24, Zeeland came from behind to defeat Northeast Grand Rapids, 11-5, also at the Jim Kaat Ballpark.
The visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Zeeland came back strong to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Reid Driesenga singled in one run and two more runs scored on an infield error.
Zeeland then took control of the game with a five-run uprising in the third. Driesenga had the big blow in the inning, a two-run single, and Alden Scholten singled in another run as Zeeland opened up an 8-3 lead.
Driesenga drove in three runs to lead the Zeeland attack, while Overweg scored three runs and knocked in two more. Graham Gruppen picked up the win in relief with two shutout innings and Doornbos got the save, striking out five over the last three innings.
Last Thursday, Zeeland fell to Caledonia 15-3 in five innings. Caledonia jumped in front with three runs in the first inning, but Zeeland battled back to cut the deficit to 5-3 with a run in the second and two in the third.
However, Caledonia broke the game open with two runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth.
Overweg led the Zeeland offense with two hits.
The team came back with a vengeance last Friday, rolling over Sparta 13-3 in five innings. Zeeland capitalized on wildness by the opponent’s pitchers, scoring seven runs on three hits, six walks and five wild pitches in the first inning. Driesenga had a two-run single to highlight the big inning.
Sparta came back to score all of its runs in the top of the third, but Zeeland responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Overweg slammed a two-run double in the fourth, and Carter Huizenga sealed the run-rule win with an RBI double in the fifth.
Overweg and Huizenga had two hits each to lead the offense, while Overweg knocked in three runs. Gruppen went the first three innings for the win, striking out five, while Huizenga struck out five in two innings of one-hit relief.
The team is coached by Aaron Gruppen, Alan Doornbos and Bill Machiele. Team members are Joe Baillargeon, Corbin Deppe, Max Dishnow, Zachary Doornbos, Reid Driesenga, Titus Fantin, Graham Gruppen, Carter Huizenga, Carson Machiele, Mason Overweg, Alden Scholten and Grayson Scholten.
