For the third time in five years, Zeeland City Manager Tim Klunder is taking a medical leave of absence as he continues to battle cancer.

The City Council Monday night appointed Assistant City Manager and Finance Director Kevin Plockmeyer to again assume the role of interim city manager while Klunder is on leave.

“This appointment gives clarity to our city team members, outside organizations and City Council on whom they should seek direction for decision-making purposes,” Klunder wrote in a memo to the council. “Additionally, if there are legal documents that need to be signed, this appointment also provides that authorization.”

Klunder, who has been city manager in Zeeland since January 2002, has been away from City Hall largely since June 9 as he has continued to undergo treatment. He used up a 10-day waiting period and has been on short-term disability since June 22.

Plockmeyer served as interim manager during each of Klunder’s two prior leaves – first from November 2021 until February 2022 after the city manager was first diagnosed with cancer, then again for about a month in the summer of 2024. His salary will be adjusted to $178,000, retroactive to June 9, until his role as interim manager ends.

“I appreciate the confidence you have in me to do this,” Plockmeyer told the council. “I have a fantastic team that I work with, and they will allow me to be able to do this as well.”

Klunder was to be honored Wednesday at an open house at the Colonial Clock Building in recognition of his 25 years as city manager.
