The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled a public hearing for later this month on a permit request by Consumers Energy to install two injection wells at its J.H. Campbell power plant in Port Sheldon Township.
An availability session and public hearing are scheduled to take place July 23 at the Midtown Center, 96 W. 15th St. in Holland. An availability session will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with the public hearing to run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The wells are two Class I injection wells that will be used to inject non-hazardous wastewater generated by the Campbell plant, which had been scheduled to be decommissioned in May of last year but has remained open by order of the U.S. Department of Energy.
EPA representatives will answer questions during the availability session, and representatives from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) will also participate. During the hearing, attendees will be able to comment orally on the draft permits. EPA may limit the time for speakers depending on the number of people who wish to speak.
EPA initiated the original comment period on the permit process on April 1. Written comments will be accepted through July 26 at 11:59 p.m. EPA will respond to all significant comments on the draft permits after the comment period closes.
The draft permits can be reviewed and written comments submitted online at regulations.gov/docket/ EPA-R05-OW-2025-2730.
If you are unable to submit electronically via the docket or orally at the hearing, or would like additional information including that maintained in the administrative record, please call Claudia Banks at (312) 353-5787. All data that Consumers Energy has submitted is available in the administrative record.
