Council OKs Sidewalk, Crosswalk Upgrades

The city of Zeeland has approved sidewalk, handicap-accessible ramp, curb and crosswalk-related improvements, mainly around local schools.

The City Council approved a contract with Brown Concrete July 6 to undertake the work. The company’s bid came in just $55 above the city’s budgeted amount of $30,000.

The improvements would take place near Creekside Middle School, Cityside Middle School, the Early Childhood Center, Lincoln Elementary School and Zeeland Christian School.

“We did that school safety report a few years back that identified some of those (recommended) improvements,” Interim City Manager Kevin Plockmeyer said.

It’s the first time that Brown Concrete has worked with the city on a project, but city officials are confident in the company’s work.

The city received two bids for the project, with the competing bid price coming in more than twice the cost of Brown Concrete’s bid, Plockmeyer said.

The bid documents require the concrete work to be completed by Aug. 21, in time for the start of the school year, with restoration completed by Sept. 4, Plockmeyer said.
