As part of a nationwide commemoration, a public reading of the Declaration of Independence took place July 8 on the steps of the Birmingham Municipal Building. The event, which was coordinated by the Piety Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Birmingham Museum, marked the 250th anniversary of the first reading of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Birmingham resident Mike Schloff, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served with distinction during the Vietnam War, was among the readers.
An attorney and past president of the Oakland County Bar Association, Schloff is pictured with Maria Woloson (left), president of the Oakland County League of Women Voters and one of the readers, and Troy attorney Lisa Milton of the DAR, who served as emcee of the July 8 event.
