Beaverdam Christian Reformed Church is gearing up to host its ninth annual Community Night celebration next Thursday.
Activities begin at 7 p.m. and will be capped off by a fireworks display at 10 p.m. on the church grounds at 5166 64th Ave.
It’s an opportunity for the community to come together, to meet up with neighbors and friends, said Tyler Wagenmaker, the church’s pastor.
“We target it specifically for the broader Beaverdam community,” Wagenmaker said. “Zeeland has their things, a lot of events. Hudsonville has their things, Allendale has their things. Beaverdam is just one of those old kind of burgs … We’re not incorporated (as) a town, but it’s still a community.”
“We have land (to hold the event), we have volunteers, we underwrite the whole thing … let’s just try to be a gathering place for the neighbors,” Wagenmaker added.
The fireworks portion of the celebration was added during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and has remained part of the festival every year since.
“Everything was shut down, and most of these communities in the area canceled their fireworks for the Fourth of July … We said we’d hold the event, we’re outdoors,” Wagenmaker said.
The church got in contact with a local fireworks company, and raised funds from local farms and businesses to pay for the display, Wagenmaker said.
Free carnival snacks will be served from 7 to 9 p.m., including chips and cheese, slushies, ice cream treats, chocolate milk, popcorn, juice boxes and water.
The event will feature many activities, displays and attractions, including:
• U.S. Army and U.S. Marines
• The King's Yomen Yo-Yo Show
• Blendon Township Fire Department
• Zeeland Township Fire Department
• Kids' Fire Training
• Balloon Twisting
• Face Painting
• Inflatable Corn Maze
• Bounce House (for kids 8 and under)
• Inflatable Slide
• Critter Barn
• Laser Tag
• Hi Striker
• Ottawa County Sheriff's Office
• Speleo Box
• Cadets, GEMS, and youth group–sponsored activities
Muskegon-based singer-songwriter Grayson Barton will perform live music beginning at 9 p.m., leading up to the fireworks at 10 p.m.
Parking is available in the church's west lot, the lot of Libertas Christian School and along 64th Avenue. People are encouraged to bring their own seating for the fireworks display.
