Blendon Township residents will continue to use the Howard Miller Library in Zeeland after voters approved a renewal and restoration of the township’s library millage Aug. 4.
Voters passed renewing and restoring the levy at 0.3 mills for the next 10 years by a little more than 100 votes – 1,301 yes to 1,197 no. The library millage had been rolled back to 0.2691 mills by the Headlee amendment since its last approval in August 2014.
Revenues from the levy will be split between the Howard Miller Library and the Gary Byker Memorial Library in Hudsonville. The levy is expected to generate $142,822 in its first year, including $14,710 from the restored portion of the tax, according to the ballot language.
The city of Zeeland has had a library services agreement with Blendon Township since 2014. In April, the City Council approved a six-month extension of that agreement through the end of this year. A provision in the agreement called for its automatic extension through Dec. 31, 2038, if voters passed the levy, Library Director Amanda Hanson said.
“Blendon library patrons retain full access to library services and digital resources (with passage of the millage),” Hanson wrote in an email to the Zeeland Record.
