The new El Rancho Mexican restaurant inside the 17 E. Main mixed-use development downtown has opened its doors, while still waiting for approval from the state for its liquor license.
The 132-seat restaurant opened about two weeks ago, manager Jorge Alberto told the Zeeland Record last Friday.
The City Council in January voted unanimously to recommend the Michigan Liquor Control Commission approve El Rancho’s application for a Class C liquor license, a Downtown Development Authority/Redevelopment license and a Specialty Designated Merchant license. It’s not yet known when the restaurant will receive word on approval of the license.
“It could be two weeks, it could be a month,” Alberto said.
Those licenses would allow the sale of alcohol for consumption both inside and outside the restaurant.
The city’s Planning Commission in September of last year approved a special land use for El Rancho, which was required because it sought to serve alcohol there. The property is zoned C-2 central business district and is located within the city’s alcohol overlay district.
Family-owned El Rancho already operates restaurants in the city of Holland, Holland Township, Greenville and Ludington.
El Rancho is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
