An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire Sunday night at Stone Plastics in Zeeland Township.
Township firefighters were called to the manufacturing facility at 8245 Riley St. shortly after 8:30 p.m. Crews encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions “involving a large piece of industrial machinery inside the facility” when they arrived, Fire Chief Brock Bruce wrote in an email to the Zeeland Record.
“Due to the conditions reported and observed, along with employee reports that the fire was spreading, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm,” Bruce wrote.
“The fire was mostly contained to a single machine inside the facility, and fire crews were able to quickly stop the fire from spreading to other machinery and areas of the building,” the chief added.
Firefighters remained on scene afterwards, conducting overhaul and ventilation operations. They cleared the scene at about 11:45 p.m., Bruce wrote.
No one was injured in the fire.
Zeeland Township Fire was assisted at the scene by City of Zeeland Fire Rescue, Jamestown Township Fire Department and Blendon Township Fire Department. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and Zeeland Police Department also assisted with traffic control.
