One Killed, Deputy Injured in Olive Twp. Crash

Michigan State Police are investigating a three-vehicle crash in Olive Township involving an Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputy that left one person dead last Thursday.

The crash took place shortly before 3 p.m. on 96th Avenue, north of Tyler Street.

A preliminary investigation showed a northbound Honda pickup truck struck a northbound Chevrolet Equinox, causing the Honda to cross the centerline and striking the sheriff’s patrol car that was headed southbound. The patrol car was en route to another personal injury crash nearby and had its lights and siren activated, Capt. J. Douglas of the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the Honda received immediate medical assistance from responding firefighters, paramedics and sheriff’s deputies, but was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Equinox was not injured. The sheriff’s deputy that was driving the patrol car was taken to a local hospital and initially listed in stable condition, Douglas said.

In accordance with standard protocol for serious crashes involving sheriff’s department vehicles, State Police assumed responsibility for the investigation, Douglas said.
