The United States Congress today held a Congressional Tribute ceremony to dedicate a statue of President Gerald Ford for placement in the Capitol Rotunda in the U.S. Capitol. Senator Debbie Stabenow joined with other Members of Congress and Congressional Leadership, including Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House John Boehner, in honoring the only American president to have come from Michigan.

“The people of Michigan are proud of Gerald Ford and the service he gave to the nation as a World War II naval officer, Vice President and President of the United States,” said Senator Stabenow.  “He also served the people of West Michigan for 25 years as their voice in the House of Representatives.  Today we honor his commitment of public service to our nation and the Great State of Michigan.”

Steven Ford, Gerald Ford’s son and a recent visitor to Grand Rapids, showed deep emotion as he unveiled the statue.

Each state supplies two official statues to stand in the U.S. Capitol complex.  President Ford’s will replace one of Michigan’s statues, that of former Senator Zachariah Chandler.  Michigan’s other statue depicts former Senator and Governor of the Michigan Territory Lewis Cass. The statue was completely funded by private donations.
