Judge Alexander Lipsey appointed to Kalamazoo County Business Court
The Michigan Supreme Court announced at the end of May the appointment of Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Judge Alexander Lipsey to the Kalamazoo County Business Court. Judge Lipsey has served as a Kalamazoo County Circuit Court judge since 2007. As a business court judge, Lipsey will oversee the court’s specialized business docket, which includes any case that involves a business or commercial dispute.
“Business courts are designed to resolve cases more efficiently and consistently,” said Justice Bridget M. McCormack, the Supreme Court’s liaison to business courts. “Business court judges must have knowledge and experience to help them decide cases more quickly so that companies can make decisions and plan for the future based on a clear and timely interpretation of the law.”
All circuit courts in Michigan with three or more judges are required by law to have a business court. There are currently 16 business courts and more than 900 opinions posted in a searchable online database.
A bankruptcy attorney with more than a decade of experience, Lipsey served as State Representative for Michigan’s 60th District 2000-2006, where his committee work focused on economic and business issues. He was Vice Mayor of Kalamazoo from 1993 to 1995 and Kalamazoo City Commissioner from 1989 to 1993. A graduate of University of Michigan Law School, Lipsey has a B.S. in Physics from Kalamazoo College.
Currently Chief Judge Pro Tem of the Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, Judge Lipsey was elected in 2008 and reelected in 2010. He is a member of the Kalamazoo, Michigan, Federal and National Bar Associations. He also serves as an Executive Com-mittee member of the Michigan Judges Association and chair of the Court Collections Committee of the State Court Administrative Office, and presides over the 9th Circuit Court’s Swift and Sure Sanctions Probation Program. He is an alternate judge for the drug treatment court.
Nominations open for 2016 Child Welfare Awards
The State Court Administrative Office’s Foster Care Review Board for is now accepting nominations for the 2016 Child Welfare Awards, given every year in the fall to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to Michigan’s foster children.
Nominations are sought for: Jurist of the Year; Foster Care Worker of the Year; Lawyer-Guardian Ad Litem of the Year; Foster Parent of the Year; and Parent Attorney of the Year.
The nomination deadline is September 6, 2016. Finalists will be chosen by a panel of Foster Care Review Board members, and award winners are chosen by a panel of child welfare professionals and advocates. including award winners from the past year.
