San Diego settles suit over boy's shooting
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Diego will pay $500,000 to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit over the 2008 shooting of a child by an off-duty policeman.
The North County Times says a settlement was reached in May with the child's father and a judge on Tuesday dismissed a cross-complaint by the city, ending the case.
The shooting occurred after the boy's mother began chasing and harassing another driver in a road-rage incident in Oceanside. The other driver, off-duty San Diego policeman Frank White, fired at the car, wounding Silva and her 8-year-old son, Johnny.
Silva pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment and was sentenced to probation.
White was charged with brandishing and negligently firing his gun but he was acquitted.

Man gets almost 22 years in meth case
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A 25-year-old Nebraskan with a long criminal record is going to federal prison for almost 22 years.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Carlos Ponce (pahns) on Thursday was given 262 months for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute it. Lincoln police say Ponce had about an ounce of meth near one of his feet when he was arrested in July 2010.
Ponce has a criminal history that dates back to when Ponce was barely a teenager, making him a career criminal under federal sentencing guidelines.
Ponce asked for some leniency on Thursday, calling himself young enough to be rehabilitated.
But U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf (kahp) disagreed, saying "the trajectory that we see here is one that suggests that the public needs to be protected from him."

Attorney charged with harboring fugitive
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- An Oklahoma City area attorney has been charged with harboring a fugitive for allegedly helping a prison escapee who she said she planned to marry.
Prosecutors filed the charge Thursday against 39-year-old Amy McTeer of Nichols Hills. Investigators say McTeer provided transportation and lodging at her home for 35-year-old Roy Kuykendall.
Kuykendall escaped July 9 from the Union City Community Corrections Facility. He was found the next day in Oklahoma City with McTeer.
McTeer told police she didn't know Kuykendall had escaped and that the two planned to marry the following day. Oklahoma County District Judge Jerry Bass told The Oklahoman that McTeer asked him to perform the ceremony.
McTeer represented Kuykendall in 2008 on a drug charge. Kuykendall pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison.
