MJA seeks nominations for Hilga Gage Judicial Excellence Award
The Michigan Judges Association is accepting nominations for its Hilda Gage Judicial Excellence Award.

Given annually, the award recognizes current or former circuit or court of appeals judges who have demonstrated exemplary service by excelling in trial and docket management, legal scholarship, and contributions to the profession and the community.

This is the third year MJA has given out the award, named in honor of the late Hilda Gage. Judge Gage served with honor on the Court of Appeals and Oakland Circuit Bench before passing away in 2010. She was renowned for her courage and scholarship. She was the first female president of MJA and the first woman to chair the Judicial Tenure Commission.

MJA seeks nominees who follow in Judge Gage’s footsteps by “serving their state and their communities with integrity, skill, and courage every day.”

Anyone can nominate a judge for the award. The deadline is July 20. Nominating forms can be obtained on the Michigan Judges Association website at www.michiganjudgesassociation.org, or by calling MJA President Timothy G. Hicks at (231) 724-6337.

Local attorneys help families in poverty
Access to Bankruptcy Court, a State Bar of Michigan “Access to Justice” program, will hold its Annual Charity Wine Tasting and Silent Auction at the Empire Restaurant & Lounge located at 52963 Van Dyke Ave., Shelby Township from 6 -9 p.m. on July 18 to help individuals and families who are living in poverty.

The charity was formed after local attorneys, judges and educators recognized a need for poverty-stricken individuals suffering financial hardship to have essential legal representation. In many cases, these people suffered some catastrophic event such as an illness, disability, or a death in the family that plunged them into economic ruin through no fault of their own.
ABC provides those living in poverty with the relief they need from mounting medical bills and other debts. With the assistance of experienced bankruptcy attorneys donating their time and resources, ABC helps the impoverished obtain the financial fresh start they need through education, debt relief assistance, and bankruptcy.
Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door. To purchase tickets or become a sponsor for the event, contact Janet M. Ziulkowski, Access To Bankruptcy Court, 17001 Nineteen Mile Rd., Ste. 1-D, Clinton Township. For more information, call (586) 484-1640 or email jmz@zaplc.com.
