Cooley law professor takes part in Day of Remembrance
Each year on September 11, the Gerald R. Ford Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and Museum honor those who sacrificed their lives during the terrorist events of Sept. 11, 2001, by hosting a Community Day of Remembrance and day-long Scout Salute. On the eve of this year's commemoration, WMU-Cooley Law School Professor and retired Brigadier General Michael C.H. McDaniel joined various police, fire, EMS and military personnel, along with nearly 100 Patriot Guard motorcyclists, as the flag that was flown at the museum for the memorial was escorted into the City of Grand Rapids.
After the flag was presented to an honor guard and raised, McDaniel, who also served as a national deputy assistant director for homeland defense planning, spoke in a ceremony honoring current members of the military and public safety professionals.
"Serving our country has changed in recent years. Anyone wearing a uniform to protect and serve their community is now a target," said McDaniel. He listed several tragic events in recent months where fire and police personnel were targets of individuals with guns, specifically looking to harm public servants. "Today it's not only our military members being targeted by terrorists, it's anyone in uniform. These brave individuals, who risk their lives everyday to protect each of us from harm, now face being killed by selfish individuals looking for attention. We truly appreciate and thank all who put their lives on the line to protect each and every one of us."
