The Macomb County Bar Foundation will host a Constitution Day celebration for high school students on Friday, Sept. 15 at the Macomb County Courthouse in downtown Mt. Clemens.
Attending the program, which starts at 8:50 a.m. in the first floor jury room, will be 100 advance placement students from Henry Ford High School, Stevenson High School and Utica High School.
The program will consist of three sessions.
In Session 1, Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Carl Marlinga will present to the students a history of the U.S. Constitution.
In Session 2, the students will break out to three courtrooms where they will work with attorneys and present to a judge an argument for a scenario about free speech.
Chief Judge James Biernat, Judge Matthew Switalski and Judge Kathryn Viviano have made their courtrooms available to the students. Those judges will be hearing the students’ arguments and discussing the likely outcomes of the scenarios.
In Session 3, Wayne State University Law School Prof. Robert Sedler will talk to the students about free speech in the United States as compared with other countries around the world.
All are invited to watch and listen.
