Topics to be covered include an overview of immigration custody and detention processes, arguments to challenge detention, getting into federal court and strategies for relief for those detained six months or longer after being ordered removed.
Organizers said they hoped the training would enable attendees to assist in the process by accepting a pro bono case for a detained immigrant.
Mentorship will be provided.
The training sessions will be led by Michael Tan of the ACLU’s Immigration Rights Project and Russell Abrutyn, an attorneywho specializes in immigration law.
Tan is a staff attorney at the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project (IRP). His practice includes litigation and advocacy relating to immigration detention, immigrants’ access to education, and the rights of undocumented young people.
He is a graduate of Harvard College and the Yale Law School and also holds a Master’s Degree in Comparative Literature from New York University.
Abrutyn is a nationally-recognized immigration law attorney. He handles both complex and routine immigration matters, including family, employment, naturalization, immigrant, nonimmigrant, waiver, asylum, removal defense, appellate, and litigation matters.
Cost for the program is $20 and a light breakfast and lunch will be provided at the training.
