No pomp but cash: EMU graduates, new students get cash gifts

YPSILANTI (AP) — Alumni at Eastern Michigan University are giving $600 to more than 2,000 new graduates and $400 to next fall’s freshmen.

GameAbove, a group of EMU alumni, said it’s donating at least $2 million to the school for the no-strings-attached gifts.

EMU President James Smith said the money could help new graduates who decide to pursue another degree in a weak economy.

“The gift to incoming students recognizes the incredible financial hardship that has been placed on students and their families due to this crisis,” Smith said.

GameAbove said it hopes the gift inspires new graduates and students to take pride in the Ypsilanti school.

“Eastern Michigan University alumni are built strong and will have each other’s back when needed,” GameAbove spokesman Denis Wolcott said.

More than 4,600 redistricting panel applications processed

The Michigan Department of State has now processed 4,637 notarized applications for the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.

“Voters said loud and clear in 2018 that they wanted to put this aspect of our democracy back in the hands of the people,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. “That we’ve continued to receive and process such a high volume of applications, even during a public health crisis, is a testament to how committed people in our state are to this opportunity.”

In addition to posting the latest applicant figures, results from the public comment period on the applicant selection process are now posted on RedistrictingMichigan.org.

The period, which ran from Feb. 26 to March 27, allowed those interested to ask detailed questions on the random selection methodology that will be used to select the 200 semifinalists for the commission following the June 1 application deadline.

Benson said residents of the state “are still very excited about this chance to shape the future and be part of Michigan history.”
Applications will be accepted until June 1.

They can be completed and notarized electronically.
