Biden nominates 2 judges to Michigan's federal courts

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Two women who became judges in 2007 are up for a promotion to federal courts on each side of Michigan.
Oakland County Judge Shalina Kumar was picked for U.S. District Court in eastern Michigan, and Court of Appeals Judge Jane Beckering was tapped for the same court in western Michigan.

The nominations, which require approval by the U.S. Senate, were made by President Joe Biden and announced Wednesday.

The White House said Kumar would be the first federal judge of South Asian descent in Michigan.

Kumar and Beckering became judges the same way, filling vacancies through appointments by then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm. They were subsequently elected by voters.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will pick their successors if Kumar and Beckering are confirmed by the Senate.

Attorney co-authors book about handling a divorce case in Michigan

Attorney Elizabeth K. Bransdorfer recently co-authored the book “Handling a Divorce Case in Michigan.” The book was published by The Institute of Continuing Legal Education and the other co-authors are Jennie Boldish Bryan and Elizabeth A. Solomon. The book is a step-by-step guide for lawyers working in the legally and emotionally complex field of divorce. It focuses on practical matters of procedure, strategy, organization, and timing rather than the substantive law which is available in other ICLE publications and includes information about Collaborative Practice and limited scope representation, which is increasing in popularity as a way for individuals of modest means to secure legal help with parts of their cases, while handling other parts themselves.

Bransdorfer practices in litigation and alternative dispute resolution, with a practice emphasis on domestic relations. She is also trained in family law Collaborative Practice.
