Judges to offer ‘Advocacy Insights’ during webinar

The Appellate Practice Committee of the Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan, and BSP Law are pleased to present a discussion with U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Julia Gibbons, Sixth Circuit, and U.S. District Court Judge Laurie Michelson, Eastern District of Michigan, about presenting argument in trial versus appellate courts. “Advocacy Insights” will take place online Wednesday, July 27, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Hallam Stanton of BSP Law will moderate the discussion.

Michelson was commissioned by President Barack Obama on March 14, 2014, to serve as a U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Michigan. She served as a magistrate judge in this District from 2011 to 2014. Michelson received her law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in 1992 and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1989. After law school, she served as law clerk to U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Cornelia G. Kennedy, Sixth Circuit. She then joined Butzel Long. Michelson is a past president of the Eastern District of Michigan chapter of the FBA. She serves on the Advisory Board of Trustees of Eton Academy and is a member of the Detroit Goodfellows.

Gibbons received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University in 1972 and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law three years later. In 1981, she became the first female trial judge in the state of Tennessee. Two years later, she was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. At 32, she was the youngest U.S. district court judge in the country. Gibbons was nominated by President George W. Bush to the Sixth Circuit in 2001 and received her commission in July 2002.
