Dickinson Wright attorney honored as 2023 Republican Lawyer of the Year
The Board of Governors of the Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) has named Charlie Spies its twentieth Republican Lawyer of the Year. Mr. Spies was selected in recognition of his outstanding professional accomplishments and years of tireless dedication and service to the Republican Party. He will be honored at a reception in Washington, D.C., on Monday, September 18, 2023.
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said, “Charlie is a force in the Republican Party – his political experience, knack for policy, and legal expertise has contributed to electing countless Republicans throughout his career. I am honored to not only call Charlie a friend, but I feel blessed to work alongside him during this presidential cycle. Congratulations to Charlie for winning Republican Lawyer of the Year, it is a well-deserved honor and Republicans from across the ecosystem are eager to celebrate and keep working onwards to victory.”
“With great pride, I congratulate my friend, Charlie, on being awarded Republican Lawyer of the Year. He’s more than earned it – always providing sound counsel, championing conservative causes, and fighting the good fight day in and day out. I can’t think of anyone more deserving to receive this honor,” added House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
Senator John Kennedy said, “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the Republican Lawyer of the Year Award than my friend Charlie Spies. I’ve been so honored to work with Charlie over the years and always appreciate his wise counsel on matters big and small. Charlie’s intellect and legal expertise are unmatched, and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
“Charlie has devoted his career to helping Republican candidates and causes,” added RNLA President Marc Ellinger, “But he is also a lawyer’s lawyer and advocates and protects the interests of his clients. For all his work for our party and his long-time work with the RNLA, Charlie truly deserves this award as he really is the Lawyer of the Year.”
Spies has been providing strategic political law counsel at the highest levels in Washington D.C. and globally for over two decades. Before moving to national law firms, Charlie worked in the NRSC Counsel’s Office, at the Federal Election Commission, served as election law counsel for multiple Chairmen at the RNC, General Counsel and CFO for the RGA, and then CFO and Counsel for Mitt Romney’s 2008 campaign for president.
The Republican Lawyer of the Year Award has been presented annually since 2004. Previous awardees include Elliot Berke, Lee Goodman, Mark Braden, and Ted Olson.
