Supreme Court seeks nominations for Maura Corrigan Foster Family Award and Daniel J. Wright Lifetime Achievement Award

The Michigan Supreme Court is currently accepting nominations for the Maura D. Corrigan Foster Family Lifetime Achievement Award and the Daniel J. Wright Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Maura D. Corrigan Foster Family Award celebrates outstanding contributions to Michigan’s children and families. This award is a tribute to former Corrigan, who, during her tenure as chief justice, championed the streamlining of the adoption process, ensuring that more children found their forever families.

“Foster parents step up to help because they love children and want to make a difference in their lives, but all too often, their efforts go unrecognized,” said Justice Megan K. Cavanagh, MSC co-liaison on child welfare matters. “This award honors those amazing parents whose efforts are so extraordinary in providing a safe and loving home to children in the foster care system that they inspire others to follow their lead.”

In 2022, Stephen and Rhonda Wurtz of Kalkaska were honored with the Maura D. Corrigan Foster Family Lifetime Achievement Award for their exceptional dedication to fostering, having provided a nurturing environment for over 330 children.

The Daniel J. Wright Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding dedication to Michigan’s children and families, celebrating individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, including attorneys, judges, caseworkers, court personnel, public and private agency staff, members of nonprofit organizations, and others who have shown unwavering commitment to supporting Michigan families and children. The award was established in honor of the late Daniel J. Wright, who served as special assistant to then-Chief Justice Maura D. Corrigan.

“Dan’s legacy and devotion to giving foster children a greater voice in decisions affecting their own lives continues to make a difference in the lives of children and continues to inspire the Court in our work,” said Chief Justice Elizabeth T. Clement.

Last year, Richard Smart, former Wayne County deputy court administrator, was honored with the Wright Award for Service to Michigan Children and Families, acknowledging his 24 years of exemplary service.
