Enjoying a nine-point lead entering the fourth quarter, the Galesburg-Augusta boys varsity basketball team showed good composure by holding off a Gobles come back for a 49-47 win January 19 at G-A High School.

Gobles was aggressive going to the basket in the fourth quarter and the visitors wound up getting to the free throw line six times, making five of them.

But two baskets by John Klimp and Adam Hubbard and a three-point basket and free throw by Jeremiah Mann in the fourth quarter helped the home team hang on for the win.

Gobles shook off a slow start when the visitors did not score until the 4:43 mark of the first quarter on a pair of free throws but took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.

The Tigers led by a 20-17 count at halftime.

G-A, now 8-2, enjoyed its biggest quarter of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Gobles  20-8 behind seven points from Mann and six from Adam Hubbard.

Mann, who scored all four G-A three-point baskets on 4-for-10 shooting, led the Rams in scoring with 17 points. Hubbard added 12 points and Klimp contributed 11 points.

The Rams made 42 percent (20-47) of their two-point attempts and shot 26 percent (4-15) from long range.

G-A, behind four swipes by Adam Hubbard, came up with 15 steals.
